MELBOURNE COUNSELLING
Real change
happens below the surface
If youโre ready to go deeper than just managing symptoms.
If you are ready to understand whatโs actually underneath and
living differently.
This is where that work begins.
YOU MIGHT BE HERE BECAUSEโฆ
Something isn't working,
And you know it goes deeper.
Most people who come to me have already tried managing on their own, pushing through, staying busy, maybe even trying surface-level fixes.
They're ready for something real.
MY APPROACH
Where the real shift happens: Deep Work
Once you're ready, we explore what's underneath, the relational patterns that often trace back to earlier experiences.
Making sense of patterns together. Itโs not analysis from above; we map it collaboratively
Targeted: We don't unpack everything, just what's actually relevant to you
Always at your pace, you stay in control of how deep we go and when
We start at the surface.
We don't stop there.
My approach is based on Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), with additional approaches.
Itโs a collaborative, relational framework that helps us map your patterns, understand where they come from, and change them together.
At your pace, always.
Where we're heading: Your True Self
This is what becomes possible through deeper work, a life that actually feels like yours.
Living within your own values, not someone else's
Peace with the past, not forgetting, but not being trapped by it
Connected, present and grounded in who you actually are
Where we begin: Surface Level
This is what becomes possible through deeper work, a life that actually feels like yours.
Understanding your patterns of behaviour and reaction
Building awareness of what triggers you and why
Practical strategies that actually hold up in real life

HOW YOU AND I WORK TOGETHER
"Think of the two of us as a team of detectives, mapping the patterns that keep showing up in your life, and finally making sense of them."

ABOUT THE COUNSELLOR
Hi, Iโm David.
Licensed Counsellor ยท Caufield, Melbourne & Online
Before I was a counsellor, I was a carpenter and site supervisor. I worked with my hands, built things, solved problems. Life felt fairly straightforward until it wasnโt. I got diagnosed with MS, became partially blind and had to find a new career.
Over time, I faced things that genuinely changed me: living with disability, finding my way through alcohol recovery, and processing a childhood that left its mark. I know what it feels like to be stuck in patterns you can't quite see clearly, to carry weight you don't fully understand, to want things to be different but not know how to get there.
Those experiences didn't just happen to me. They shaped the way I work. I don't come at this from a textbook. I come at it as someone who has genuinely had to go below the surface in my own life, and who came out the other side.
I'm LGBTQIA+ inclusive, I've worked with people navigating identity, shame, internalised queerphobia, and the particular kind of isolation that comes from not feeling seen or accepted. I've also worked in Men's Behavioural Change programs, Addiction recovery, and I have deep experience supporting people through significant and often unwanted life transitions.
My approach is warm, honest and deeply collaborative. I'm not the expert on your life; you are. My job is to help you see your own patterns clearly, understand where they came from, and find your own way through them. We work together, you stay in control.
I'm currently completing a Master's in Counselling at Edith Cowan University (graduating 2027), building on a Diploma in Counselling, a Graduate Certificate in Service Design & Behavioural Sciences (RMIT), an Associate Degree in Humanities and Social Science (Bond University), and many years of hands-on practice.

MY WORK IN PRACTICE
What the path can look like.
Three illustrations of the kind of work we might do together.
These are composite, fictional case studies. Names and details are hypothetical; no real clients are represented. The patterns, however, are very real.
CHRONIC ILLNESS
Sophie had a diagnosis. What they needed was a way to live with it.
Presenting issue: FND (Functional Neurological Disorder), grief of past self, acceptance
Sophie, 32, had been diagnosed with FND after years of unexplained symptoms. They described feeling like both a stranger and prisoner in their own body, grieving the person they used to be, exhausted from fighting a reality they couldn't change, and increasingly angry at themselves for not "getting better."
Our work wasn't about fixing their illness. It was about exploring their very real grief for their pre-FND self, understanding the patterns of self-criticism and resistance that were adding to their suffering, and finding a way forward that honoured both their limitations and their very real strengths.
Sophie found a new normal, one they built themselves, on their own terms. They stopped fighting themselves and started moving forward, with far more compassion for who they actually are now.
IDENTITY & SHAME
James felt broken. His attractions didn't fit the story he'd been told about himself.
Presenting issue: Bisexual identity creating internalised shame, anxiety
James, 28, had grown up in a conservative community. He'd always been attracted to both men and women, and the messages he'd internalised told him this made him fundamentally flawed, broken, wrong, something to be fixed. The shame was relentless and was driving anxiety, withdrawal, and self-destructive drinking.
Together we unpacked where those messages came from, not to relive his upbringing, but to clearly separate James from the beliefs he'd absorbed as a child. The deep work was about finding his actual self beneath the shame he'd been carrying since he was a young boy.
James moved from feeling broken to feeling whole. His drinking stopped being a problem. He built friendships and connections that felt honest, real, and entirely his own.
IMPULSE CONTROL
Mark kept losing his temper, and losing the people he loved.
Presenting issue: Anger & impulsive reactivity
Mark, 34, came in after his partner threatened to leave. His anger was explosive, at work, at home, in traffic. He'd tried willpower alone, and kept failing. He was ashamed and didn't understand why he couldn't just stop.
At the surface level, we worked on the patterns: what triggered the reaction, psycho-eduction, what happened in his body, how to interrupt the cycle before it escalated. But the real shift came deeper, mapping how Mark had grown up in a house where anger was the only emotion anyone expressed. His reactions weren't random. They made complete sense once we could see them clearly.
Over nine months, Mark rebuilt and developed a completely different relationship with his own anger. He didn't stop feeling it, he learned to understand it, and it stopped controlling him.
